2021.10.17 06:08 MinalanSpellmonger Razer Orochi V2 Review: Great Hardware, a firmware update away from being great
Disclaimer: Bought by me...all opinions are mine...etc, etc.
About Me: Hand Size: 19.05 cm x 10.8 cm
Current Top 3 Mice: MM 720, Roccat KPA, OOX
Mouse Pad: Wicked Bunny Sprint (moving to Aqua control+ non-coated pad)
Grip Styles: Relaxed fingertip, fingertips
Packaging and Contents: The front is a little cluttered with the two logos at the top left (not needed) but not enough so that it distracts the eye from looking at the mouse the middle. The foil Orochi V2 lettering is nicely done and should be enough to draw you in when the retail store lights reflect off of it. It has 3 key selling points at the bottom in small print with the LAUGHABLY deceptive <60g weight marketing. The left side has marketing HYPERSPEED fluff and lists the box contents (not a fan). The rear tells you exactly what you need to know in two languages and only at the VERY BOTTOM will you see in small print that the mouse weights <60g excluding the battery, for shame Razer! I would like to see the design of the packaging less cluttered with marketing and just show the mouse. There should be plenty of room to have a 1:1 picture of the mouse after removing the unnecessary HYPERSPEED and Bluetooth logos, save that for the back. The interior packaging on the other hand is plenty protective without being wasteful, I really like this approach since our landfills are already full enough.
Contents: Mouse, USB dongle, Energizer AA Li-ion battery, and booklet. I'd like to see an extender and/or extra feet in the box but at this price point I think it teeters on the edge of not needing them.

Mouse Dimensions and Shape: 108mm L x 60mm W x 38 mm H
This mouse feels like it took inspiration from 3 different mice. It feels like it has a similar top to the Corsair Katar Pro, a less indented MM720 left side, and a more refined G305 right side (doesn't curve drastically down and inward). In essence it took the best of all 3 and put them together. For someone with a fairly large hand the shape is super comfortable in fingertip/relaxed fingertip. I MUCH prefer this shape over the G305. I feel like I have a more stable grip and my hand doesn't cramp at all while using it. If you use your fingers to do downward flicks you will notice the freedom you have in movement. At the moment this is my favorite small mouse shape.
How I grip the mouse clip: https://i.imgur.com/wybjjoZ.mp4
Coating and Side-grips: The coating on the Orochi V2 feels like a rougher version of the Rival 3 coating. It also feels like the plastic is more “dry” than the Rival 3. With that said it feels nice to the touch and seems to aid in grip without being noticeable in use. Just think of a more textured PBT keycap and you will be in the ball park. With that said I still prefer the Rival 3 coating as it gives the impression of being more premium. On my copy the top shell feels a bit rougher than the sides but unless you're looking for that difference it's hard to tell. I really like that it's a true matte coating and doesn't seem to show fingerprints easily. Over all I like the coating.
\**NOTE**\** I have heard that the custom shells are smooth and almost slick to the touch, however I do not have any in-house to confirm or dispute this.
Mouse Clicks: Modified Kailh Red 4.0's. On my copy the Left click feels incredible. I could tell immediately that these were derived from 4.0's as that is my favorite mouse switch to date. They tinkered with it enough so the click feel is more pinpoint than most 4.0 implementations while not feeling quite as heavy. It also resets really fast. However, if you think that Kailh 8.0's are too heavy than I would stay away from this mouse. The right click feels like a badly implemented Omron 50m mushy mess. This is the worst switch discrepancy I've ever seen. It is so bad and so light that it constantly caused accidental clicks. I don't know if this is a widespread issue, but as far as I'm aware I haven't seen this mentioned so I'm wondering if I just got a bum copy. Both clicks have minimal pre an post travel. If both clicks were like the left these would be an easy 9.0-9.5/10 click feel. Fingers crossed that this is just on my copy.
Side Buttons: The side buttons feel great. They are snappy, crisp and reset fast. The rear button feels a touch more spongy than the front but still feels quite good. They are not incredibly large but the mouse seems to place my hand exactly in the right place to hit them perfectly. I like 'em.
DPI Button: The DPI button is cleverly recessed and is positioned perfectly to be close enough to remap but far enough away to avoid accidental clicks. I like that they made the button glossy to blend in even more with the one glossy strip on the mouse. The click itself is slow and kinda mushy, definitely not for spamming.
Scroll Wheel and M3: I absolutely didn't expect to like the scroll wheel as much as I did. The steps are tactile, refined and close together. The wheel is tentioned very lightly so scrolling is a breeze. It almost feels too easy to scroll but I never mis-scrolled once. The scrolling experience is reminiscent of a much lighter to scroll Roccat Kain 120 (one of my favorite scroll wheels of all time). Typical of most scroll wheel encoders it is louder to scroll up than down. However the sound isn't as annoying as something like a Zowie wheel so it never bothered me. M3 is light and is actuated either by pressing straight down or to the right. It feels easier to actuate when pressing right. The travel distance is short and the reset is medium-fast. I wouldn't hesitate to spam the M3. Nicely done here!

Mouse Feet: Out of the box I had a problem with mine. Whenever I would do a large swipe to the left I could feel and hear scratching. I thought this would go away with break-in but after 2 days I was fed up. I took a close look at the feet and there were raised corners on the top and bottom skate. It was hard to spot, but after I did I just pressed my thumb along the entire length of all the skates multiple times to tamp them down. After that it was smooth sailing. I think the skates adhesive didn't bond well or they were not placed correctly from factory... who knows. They are fairly thick and glide really well. They are similar to MOW skates in speed, but have just enough more control to aid in stopping. These feel like you are gliding smoothly while the MOW feet feel slippery. These are definitely some of the best stock skates I've used yet...after fixing them that is.
Cable and Strain Relief: None. Wireless fam rejoice!

Weight and Balance: Stock weight with included battery is 72g (NOT 60g!!!). You can get this down to 64-66g with a Lithium Ion AAA. I actually prefer using a AAA with the tin foil mod to place in the central AA slot. With the included battery it feels only slightly tail heavy, but with the mod it feels almost perfectly balanced. With a AAA in the rear slot it oddly feels similar to a AA in the front slot (most likely because of the weight difference). I played well with both the included battery and a Li-ion AAA, I think this is a huge step up from the G305 and Katar Pro. Definitely an ingenious unofficial weight balancing design!
***NOTE**\* You can fine tune the weight of the mouse even more so if you have a specific weight in mind. For example a Rayovac alkaline AAA put the weight at 68g.

Sensor, Sensor Placement and LOD: It's an 18k optical that feels snappy to me, but not quite as much as the 3389. The sensor placement is very forward on the mouse and I'm thankful for that. It allows for more left and right wrist movement before having to reposition your arm. HOWEVER since this mouse is so short it makes this look more exaggerated than it actually is and switching from a central positioned sensor to this shouldn't take long to get used to. The forward sensor should not effect arm aimers. The LOD can be set from 1 to 2 mm, I always set mine to 1.
Compare where my thumb is in relation to the sensor on the Orochi V2 vs KPA

KPA thumb placement: https://i.imgur.com/cGMNvk0.jpg
RGB: None. Best/Worst ever.
Software: ...F*** you software...I'd always heard how bad synapse was but I figured by now it would have been updated and fixed. I have never been more frustrated with software. Ever. The first impressions are great as the interface is nice and everything is easy to use. They have great features and control of the mouse. I really like that you can set the low battery alert to whatever percentage you want instead of just the standard 20%. All of the standard features are there, polling rate, macros, etc. Everything looks great, you set all of your settings exactly as you want, save and go to delete the software...now the mouse disconnects randomly. Sometimes it's every 30 seconds, sometimes it's 20 minutes (and yes I tried every USB port, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1). It is a mess. Even after re -downloading the software the mouse still disconnects sporadically, for me that is a definite deal breaker. If they actually fixed this issue it would be nicely done.
\**NOTE**\** For some reason whenever the Orochi V2 dongle is plugged in it screwed up all of my other wireless mice. It would tank the dpi on them by around 100 dpi whether the software was installed or not. This went away after I unplugged the dongle and turned my other mice off and back on. I definitely don't like that it messes with my other mice since I usually have at least 2 for different functions.
Wake Up Time: Instant, it's almost like it doesn't even go to sleep. Perfect.
Polling Rate: It is a rock freaking solid 1000hz. It rarely spikes/dips and when it does it only dipped to 999hz and spiked to 1004hz and immediately dropped back to 1000hz. This is rare and shows that Razer is really pushing wireless to a new standard.
polling rate test clip: https://i.imgur.com/8Cf00MW.mp4
Aesthetics: This is one of my favorite looking mice out right now. I dig the stealth look a lot! It reminds me of a sleeper car that looks plain as hell on the outside but is a demon under the hood. I am a HUGE fan of the logo and how minimal it is. This is definitely a mouse that you can use for both office and play.
Price: $70+tax. For all that it entails I think it's worth it if you don't mind the software.
Am I Satisfied With My Purchase?: I have to say no. Mine started not wanting to turn on soon after purchasing, and when it did it would disconnect randomly. The software was an issue on day one and the fact that it messed with my other wireless mice was another deal breaker. I've heard of all the finicky solutions that others have suggested but in my opinion you shouldn't have to do any of those things, a mouse should just work out of the box. From a shape perspective it is absolutely a banger of a product, if they ever fix all of the things that I mentioned I will gladly revisit it.
Is It My New Main?: Not a chance. It had a glimmer of hope on the first day when it broke into my top 3 best scores on Kovaak's, and in competitive games it played beautifully...when it worked. However, with the issues I've had with it I can't trust it, especially in competitive play.
Is it Overpriced (rant)?: From a hardware perspective NO it isn't. Think about it, compare it to the Katar Pro and G305 on PARTS. Both of those give you craptastic switches (longevity), a generic horrible alkaline battery, worse sensor (mostly the Katar Pro), terrible mouse feet, subpar scroll wheels, and worse features. To replace the battery you add cost, to replace those switches because they go bad fast adds cost, for better mouse feet that adds cost and the weight balance in them is terrible (yes, yes I know you can mod the G305 PCB to be better but most people aren't going to do that). This mouse gives you premium hardware features at a fair price and any YouTubereviewer who disagrees I will be happy to debate them. You can't just say that a $70 wireless mouse is overpriced because you can get a $40 one that does basically the same thing. There is much more to it than that, especially when there is better quality materials/parts involved. I mean just switches and mouse feet alone would cost ~$20, plus the battery, time involved and actually having the tools to solder in the switches. They are giving you an enthusiast-grade mouse right out of the box. HOWEVER, both the G305 and Katar Pro actually WORKED right out of the box. No software problems to speak of. No drops in wireless and they didn't interfere with any of my other mice. They also didn't require me to have my software open to actually work right and didn't cause problems after I deleted the software. So for me I would use the other 2 just based on software/firmware reliability, however if they fixed those issues there is absolutely no contest (if you like the shape).
Player Recommendations: Palm: only the tinniest of hands Claw: Medium, small hands (large can work if you choke up really high on the mouse) Fingertip: Large, Medium (small works if you have stubby fingers but wide hands)
Recommendations For a New Revision and Software Fixes: -FIX THE DAMN SOFTWARE AND FIRMWARE!!! -Make sure that the clicks are matched correctly -Fix minor QC issues (i.e. mouse feet issue) -Update the wireless dongle so that it doesn't interfere with other wireless mice/products
Closing Statement: For a mouse that I have only a handful of qualms with it is the one that I can't recommend the most in it's current state. I understand all the hype that this mouse has gotten, I agree with most of it, but for me those few issues and the fact that it started having problems soon after purchasing is a deal breaker. In my opinion from a hardware perspective this mouse is damn near perfect, and adding in the possibility for easy customization is incredible. You can tell that Razer listened to the community's feedback and ran with it. I love that, but the software and finicky nature of the Orochi V2 needs to be worked out before I could ever recommend it to anyone. Who knows, maybe I just got the one copy that had every bug known to mice, and if that's the case I will gladly come back and re-review the Orochin V2. Keep on innovating Razer. You have the hardware down, now PLEASE fix everything else...
