2022.01.25 17:36 SirWhateversAlot The financial system is designed to steal your wealth.

Let's list just some of the ways this system is structured to screw you and me.
Bailouts: When the banks make big bets and win, they keep the profits. When they lose, they charge it to the US Treasury, which puts you on the hook.
Bail-ins: If the banks ever get into trouble (even if they caused it), chances are they can reach into your account and cover their losses. If push comes to shove, they'll just drop all pretense and help themselves to your money.
Interest rate policies: This where it gets really screwy. The Federal Reserve, which controls the supply of dollars in the US, responds to recessions by lowering interest rates. This makes borrowing and spending cheaper, while saving is less rewarding. They do this to get you to stop saving money in your bank account and start spending by loading up on debt. If you try to do the responsible thing and put it into savings, you lose money because inflation eats it up faster than it grows. They are herding people into racking up debt and punishing them for trying to save for the future.
The stock market: When the stock market crashes, the Federal Reserve prints a metric ton of dollars and buys bonds, which lowers interest rates. The bond holders (usually banks and such) now have a ton of fresh cash from selling their bonds to the Fed. They then go into the stock market and buy, buy, buy. Stocks go up, and guess who owns stocks? The wealthy. Guess who doesn't own stocks? You, because you're poor. And when you do buy them, the future returns are lower, because you're late to the party and the Fed is done goosing the market. Then the wealthy sell into the rally and you get stuck holding the bag. Rinse and repeat.
Housing: That printed money goes into housing, too. Yes, the Federal Reserve prints money, shoves it into banks and financial firms, and they buy houses. You get priced out of homeownership because they're bidding with money they printed, while you have to actually work for that money. Eventually, you just become a serf and rent from the banker. When money is printed like this, wealth is being transferred from you to whoever gets the printed dollars (hint: the wealthy).
Inflation: When prices go up because the people in charge printed tons of cash and "inadvertently" enriched themselves by getting a huge share of it, you lose out because the dollars you work for buy less. Unless you start making more money fast, your quality of life goes down. If you're on fixed income like social security payments, your quality of life has been permanently handicapped. The value of the money has been diluted down, and the only people who benefit are those who have their hands on that freshly printed cash.
In conclusion, the financial system is structured to ensure that the wealthy reap all of the gains while you pay for all the losses. If you let them work you like this, you will keep accruing debt until you're shuffled into a kind of debt-serfdom.
This is partially the result of a select few being able to print money whenever they want. I know gold standards seem archaic, but this is why they were designed - to keep the guys in charge of the money printer from enslaving the people.
People have understood this for a long time - here's Thomas Jefferson saying this exact thing:
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.”
He nailed it.
Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

2022.01.25 17:36 lizlacr Vacation time

My boyfriend gets 2 weeks of vacation from work and already must take 4 days for a friend’s wedding across the country, now he has planned a week long getaway with his buddies and the remaining 1 day he receives he has planned a weekend long beach trip. This leaves us no time to take a vacation together. Am I reasonable in being upset?

2022.01.25 17:36 UnawareMarmoset Adding a dog into the mix

My husband desperately wants to adopt a dog, specifically a German Shepard. We have two cats, 12 and 6 who have never lived with a dog and neither of us have ever owned a dog. I am hesitant because we don’t know how the cats would react, but also I would hate to have to return a dog because it didn’t work out. The shelter I used to volunteer at would let people do weekend sleep overs with the dogs to make sure it was a good fit but I haven’t found any shelters in my new state that do that. Other things I’m concerned about is the dog getting into the litter box as well as eating the cats food (we use and automatic bowl so they get fed 4 small portions a day). I know some of this could be mitigated by keeping the dog in a crate however I hate the idea of the dog being stuck in a crate for 8 hours a day.
Those of you who have introduced a dog into your fur family how did it go? Any advice on mitigating some of my concerns?
